Ailsa here, a fine artist based in the Scottish Borders. I'm also an unpaid carer in my thirties with a neurodivergent brain and malfunctioning uterus and you might think that would leave me a bit cranky and, uh, you would be right!

So when I sit down to paint I paint what I want, for myself and often about myself. I love to share my knowledge, process and work, especially if it helps demystify capital A Art and the creative process for others. However! I paint selfishly, this is a form of communication that feels 'right' to me and I'm going to indulge in it without feeling guilty.

Creating has never been an option for me, it's just jam that's always escaping the doughnut and sand in your socks. It's going to happen anyway so I may as well direct it and harness it and maybe make something cool. I choose to be driven by the natural world, personal expression and the emotional and physical sensations of my materials.

I use all sorts of mediums and follow threads of inspiration where they wanna go. For me, creation is more important than cohesion.
